It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Edmond Fredrick ‘Ed’ Evong, who passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at home at the age of 64.

Born in Sydney on February 9, 1962, Ed was the son of the late Edmond Alexander and Viola Mary (Burke) Evong. He grew up on Grand Lake Road, where the early chapters of a life filled with music, creativity, hard work, and a love of bringing people together began.

As a young man, Ed ventured to Ontario, where he would spend 18 years building a life and working as an operator in the factory district. Eventually, however, Cape Breton called him home, and his return marked the beginning of a new chapter that would allow one of his greatest talents to flourish.

Ed pursued his passion for the culinary arts, earning his Red Seal certification and going on to work in and manage a number of restaurants throughout the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. For Ed, preparing food was far more than simply a job. It was a craft, an art form, and a source of tremendous pride. He cared deeply about every dish that left his kitchen, from the way it was prepared to the way it was presented. Through his food, Ed had a way of creating experiences, bringing people together around a table and sharing something of himself in every meal he prepared.

As he began to ease into retirement, Ed found a particularly meaningful place to share his talents at the Breton Ability Centre, preparing meals for residents and staff. His role there became about much more than food.

Ed took great pride in helping expand the services available to the Breton Ability Centre community, including his involvement in establishing Breton Abiliteas, a coffee shop where residents and staff could gather and enjoy something special together. More importantly, Ed saw an opportunity to share what he knew.

Ed used the coffee shop as a place to teach and encourage residents, introducing them to the culinary arts and helping them develop practical skills in food preparation, customer service, and serving others. In doing so, He shared not only his knowledge but also his confidence in the abilities of those around him. It was a fitting reflection of the way he lived: taking something he loved and using it to create opportunities and enjoyment for others.

Alongside his love of food was another passion that remained with Ed throughout his entire life — music. A talented drummer, Ed discovered music at an early age. During his teenage years, he played with numerous bands, performing at local venues and becoming part of Cape Breton’s vibrant music community. What began as the excitement of a young musician behind a drum kit grew into a lifelong love that never left him. Through every chapter of his life, music remained a constant source of joy and expression, a passion he carried with him until his final days.

Ed will be lovingly remembered by his partner of 17 years, Noel Daley; three children; six grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Sunni, who was a treasured companion. He will also be remembered by his extended family, friends, former colleagues, fellow musicians, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout the years.

Ed’s was a life shaped by creativity. Whether seated behind a drum kit, standing over a stove creating the perfect dish, teaching someone a new skill, or simply sharing what he loved with those around him, he brought passion and pride to the things that mattered most to him.

The meals he prepared will be remembered. The lessons he shared will continue through those he taught. The music he played will echo in the memories of those fortunate enough to have heard it.

And above all, Ed will be remembered for a life spent doing what he loved and sharing those gifts with others.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation for the late Ed Evong. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. All who knew and loved Ed are welcome to attend and join together in celebrating his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s memory may be made to the Breton Ability Centre or the Cape Breton SPCA, two organizations that reflect the compassion and connections that were meaningful throughout Ed’s life.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
