76, Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Harold Dicks on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on June 28, 1936 in Charlottetown, P.E.I., Harold was the son of the late Captain Edward and Frances (McCabe) Dicks-MacIsaac.

Harold grew up on Broadway in Whitney Pier and after high school joined the Canadian Navy, an experience he treasured over the years. He was well known in the auto parts industry where he worked throughout his career until retirement.

Harold spent many a day casting a fly or dropping a line with friends. He will be well remembered as a great story teller. Both, Harold and Theresa could be found in the audience of most concerts in Cape Breton or socializing with their friends at the Spanish River Seniors Club. Over the last 25 years, Harold compiled a comprehensive history of the Dicks family tree and enjoyed discussing it with his contacts worldwide. Most recently, Harold and Theresa have enjoyed their new found friends on Jim Mac Court.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, Theresa (Roach) and daughters, Wanda (Ed) Fedora, Helen (Wayne) Barrington and Colleen Dicks. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Chris and Amy Fedora, Lacey and Colin Barrington, and Nicholas and Tomas Pustovalov.

Besides his parents, Harold was predeceased by stepfather, Danny MacIsaac; half-brother, Bill Dicks and half-sisters, Audrey, Edith, Catherine and Edna.

By Harold’s request, cremation has taken place with no memorial service. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Harold Dicks will be held at the Spanish River Seniors Hall, 1842 Kings Rd., Sydney River on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, from 2-4 p.m.

Donations in memory of Harold may be made to the Cancer Care Patient Fund, c/o Tom MacNeil, social worker, Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, An Cala Palliative Care Unit.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.
