William Raymond Blackwood, age 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Bill was born in New Waterford on December 10, 1935, Bill lived a full and active life, embracing each day with energy and enthusiasm. His many interests included dancing, playing tarbish and euchre, riding motorcycles, rollerblading and ice skating, curling and people watching at the mall sharing a coffee with friends. His adventurous spirit and love of staying active remained with him throughout his life.

Bill was predeceased by his daughter, Raylene Lewis (Blackwood) and son, Raymond (Sandy) Blackwood.

Bill will be lovingly remembered by his family remaining children, John, William John and Lynn; grandchildren, Natasha Lewis-Doherty, Bradley Lewis, Alain Bourgeois, Christine Bourgeois, Logan Blackwood, Spencer Blackwood, Will Blackwood, and Debbie Blackwood. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him great joy, and he cherished the time spent with each of them.

Bill had a long and distinguished work life starting the coal mines as a young boy, later working on survey vessels and a fulfilling many years as a heavy equipment operator with the international union of operating engineers. A couple of his proudest jobs include working on the Mayflower mall and the Causeway.

Bill was equally blessed with the lifelong relationship and friendship with Ruth Mae Blackwood. Their bond remained a treasured part of his life.

Those lucky enough to know him will remember Bill for his warm smile, sense of humor, and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. Be it on the dance floor, skating (roller and ice), at the curling rink, at the card table playing Tarbish, 45s or Euchre. He loved sharing stories with family and friends making lasting memories that touched many lives.

William ‘Bill’ leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of William Blackwood will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Thursday, June 18, 2026. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 noon with the memorial service to follow at 12 noon in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
