Whitney Pier

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved Barbara Jean Miller (née Eddy). Barbara passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the age of 72 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born on May 10, 1954, Barbara was a lifelong resident of Sydney, Whitney Pier, Cape Breton. She was a passionate advocate for others, a champion for the underdog, and a respected leader in her community. Barbara served as Chairperson of the Cape Breton Regional School Board for eight years and also worked for Citizenship and Immigration Canada, from which she retired.

Barbara leaves behind her loving husband, Wayne; cherished stepchildren, Gian (Bobby) MacLean, and Wayne (Amy) Miller, and five adored grandchildren, Calan and Ethan MacLean, and August, Nova, and Reign Miller. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

She will be deeply missed by her sisters, Louise Moe, and Kathy (Bernie) Thompson; brother, Martin (Darlene) Eddy, as well as by her many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives she touched with her kindness, strength, and generosity.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Margaret (MacInnis) Eddy; brothers, Jerry, and Don Eddy, and sister, Beverly Bryant.

Barbara’s legacy of compassion, service, and dedication to her family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Barbara Miller will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, June 8, 2026. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.

Donations in memory of Barbara may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Breton, Whitney Pier.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
