Formerly of Christmas Island, Catherine ‘Kay’ Brown died on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Christmas Island, Kay was the daughter of the late Roderick J. and Elizabeth (MacInnis) MacNeil.

Kay was a professional cook having worked at The Cove Guest Home, Cape Breton Hospital, Meadows Motel and the Isle Royal Motel. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Kay enjoyed spending time knitting, shopping, baking, playing bingo and listening to Scottish and Gaelic music.

Kay is survived by her husband, Bernard Brown; sons, Bernard and Roderick; daughters, Catherine (Karl) Kleinschmidt and Mary Witzell and grandchildren, Alexander and Eric Kleinschmidt, Kayla Blackwood and Emma and Jacob Witzell.

Besides her parents, Kay was predeceased by brothers, Michael J., John Murdock and John Alex and sisters, Florence Bush and Mary Lucy MacNeil.

In keeping with Kay’s wishes there will be no visitation. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of Catherine ‘Kay’ Brown will be held on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St, Joseph’s Church, Sydney with Fr. James Oliver officiating. Interment will take place in St. Barra’s Cemetery, Christmas Island.

Donations in memory of Kay may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
