85, Sydney

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we share the news that our beloved mother passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, Sydney River, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney, Erma was the daughter of the late Sidney and Emilia (Whalen) Jones.

Erma was a member of Trinity United Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom was a person who possessed an amazing strength of mind, body and courage and meeting each challenge with determination. She gave us strength and memories to treasure. Mom, you are our mother and best friend. Erma loved family gatherings and especially, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Erma will be forever loved by all who knew her.

Erma was predeceased by her loving husband, George Maxwell in 1975, a son, George James in infancy, sisters, Doriel May Campbell and Geraldine Jones.

Erma will be sadly missed by her family, Marilyn (Robert) Ranson, Sydney, Brenda (Eric) Flint, Toronto, Ingrid (John) Shannon, Dartmouth, and Pauline (Donald ‘Rocket’) MacDonald, Sydney, George Jr.(Helene) Maxwell, Calgary, and John Maxwell, Cold Lake, Alta.; adopted daughters, Agnes Reddick, Montreal, and Peggy Gallant (Joe Phillipo); sister, Melda (Peppy) Delorenzo; brother, George (Edith) Jones, Sydney. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Lisa (Troy) Oakley, Reann (Arthur) Arsenault, Jason (Mary) Shannon, Brandie Shannon, Mark (Julie) MacDonald, Erin, Lauren and Arlene Maxwell, Jared Maxwell and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation for the late Erma M. Maxwell will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. Duncan Roach officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Erma may be made to Trinity United Church Fund or a charity of ones choice.

The Maxwell family gives many thanks to the staff at the Dialysis unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility the Handi-Trans bus drivers and the EHS drivers for the care and compassion given to Erma during her time of need. Special thanks to our sister, Pauline for the profound love and kindness given to mom over the years as her guardian and care giver.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

When tomorrow starts without me;
Don’t think of me as gone;
Don’t think we are far apart;
For every time you think of me;
I am right here in your Heart.

Aunt Ermie will be greatly missed and her beautiful welcoming smile.  I did not see her that much due to different locations but I loved her dearly and she always made me feel so special and a part of the family.  I always enjoyed spending time with her especially when she visited with Uncle George to Truro when I was a very young girl growing up.  May she rest in peace.  Her memories will live in my heart forever.
