With sadness and fond memories we announce the passing of Mary Ellen Hannigan on February 24, 2012 at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness, surrounded by her family.

Born on June 19, 1919, Mary was the daughter of the late George and Josephine (Muise) Hannigan.

Mary was a member of C.W.L., St. Patrick’s Church. She was devoted to her faith. Mary enjoyed baking bread, playing tarbish and loved feeding the birds. Mary will be remembered by her family and friends as loving and caring.

Mary leaves behind her daughters, Lillian (Herb) Phillips, Margaree, Helen (Les) Little, New Germany, Ann (Robyn) Doyle, Mississauga and Charlene (Wally) Ivany, Baddeck; sons, Jerry (Bea), Bowmanville, Danny, Margaree, Raymond (May), Belleville, Thomas, Margaree, Michael, Hamilton, Pat, Inverness, and Francis (Lillian), Margaree; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister, Alice (Everett) MacNeil, New Waterford; brother, Ernest (Norma), New Waterford, and sister in-laws, Edna Hannigan, Boston, Katherine Hannigan, New Waterford, Edith Hannigan, Yarmouth and Theresa Hannigan, Glace Bay.

Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Doyle; daughters, Agnes, Josie and Margaret; son, Bill; sister, Kathleen Holdorson, and brothers, Leo, Archie, Paddy, Harold and Greg Hannigan.

Visitation for the late Mary Ellen Hannigan will be held on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Church Hall, North East Margaree. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of Mary Ellen Hannigan will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church with Fr. Douglas MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Donations in memory of Mary may be made to charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Sincere condolences to all the family. I grew up on Wood Ave & ma (Kaye) & your mom were great friends. I have so many great memories of Mary Ellen visiting our home.The last time I saw her was at mom’s funeral..we had a chat about their days together. What a great lady she was.
