We, the family, regret to inform you that Harry Phillips, East Broadway, passed away on Dec. 8, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after battling with cancer.
Born in Bolsward, Holland, Aug. 23, 1946, Harry was the son of the late Hugh and Fredricka (Keesen) Phillips.

Harry worked for Irving oil doing pump maintenance. He also worked at Mullins Coal Bank, the former coke ovens and retired as a millwright at Sydney Steel. Harry was also known for his expertise at fixing compressors and also as the man who owned “The Tank”. He was also foreman for the building of South Bar ball field.

Harry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary (Fraser) Phillips and by his two sons, Warrant Blair Phillips (Tina), Lawrencetown and Mark Phillips, at home. He is also survived by two grandsons, Alex and Scotty; six sisters, Hughena ‘Weinie’ (Dave Robinson), Moncton, Linda (Greg Murphy), Bernita ‘Honey’ (Danny MacNeil), both of Hamilton, Patsy (Alan Moss), Lyda (Bobby), Mary Anita ‘Bunny’, all of Sydney; six brothers, Donnie ‘Bruchie’, Toronto, Hilton ‘Jr.’ (Trish), Wendell (Bip), Melvyn, Johnny and Glen, all of Sydney; sister in-law, Margie Parr and brother-in-law, Kevin Young. Harry also leaves to mourn his mother-in-law, Florence Fraser; sisters-in-law, Betty (Greg Hill), Diane Delaney, Donna (Blair McKinnon) and brothers-in-law, Jimmy (Frances) Fraser, Michael (Mary) Fraser. He will also be missed by his aunts, Clara Gale, Thelma, Olga and Myrna; uncle, Elmer along with numerous nieces and nephews, and special cousin, Norma.

Besides his parents, Harry was predeceased by a sister, Brenda; brother, Larry; brother-in-law, Blair Fraser, Pat Delaney; nephews, Donnie Fraser and Kendall Hill; niece, Pam Moss and his sister-in-law, Rose Marie Fraser.

Visitation for the late Harry Phillips will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd., Sydney, today (Saturday), Dec. 10, 2011, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 11, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Harry Phillips will be held Monday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in memory of Harry may be made to The Lodge That Gives, Halifax, Palliative Care Society-An Cala unit or Cancer Center Patient Care Fund-active account, c/o Tom MacNeil.
