With sadness, we the family regret to announce the passing of Ethelston August ‘Luke’ Lucas on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born April 15, 1931, in Sydney, Luke was the son of the late Alonzo and Miriam (Weeks) Lucas.
Luke worked in the Blooming Mill at Sydney Steel until his retirement. In his earlier days he was a competitor in Track & Field. Luke loved baseball, for he was a fan of the Blue Jays as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was an avid fisherman and ice skater. He enjoyed having a social drink with friends. Luke will always be remembered by family and friends as a genuine gentleman, who always had a smile on his face.
Luke is survived by his daughter, Tara; sons, Floyd (Marlaine) and William; granddaughters, Rachel, Jana, Kelsey, Jessica and Brandy; sisters, Olga (Lem), Elease and Naomi (Richard); brother, Gideon (Sylvia); as well as several nieces, nephews and best friends, Dave McCormick and Garfield Moe.
Besides his parents, Luke was predeceased by his loving wife, Winnifred Viola ‘Winnie the Poo’, a brother, William, and sisters, Mae and Ruth.
Visitation for the late Ethelston August ‘Luke’ Lucas will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Friday, Aug. 26, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Luke’s life will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel with Rev. Bruce DeYoung officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area. A private family interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney at a later date.
Family flowers only, donations in memory of Luke may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
