It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother, Teresa Mary MacDonald of Sydney on June 11, 2011, at the Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Whitney Pier in 1925, Teresa was the daughter of the late David and Margaret (Hayes) Piercey.

Mum served as a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in the Second World War. She was an avid reader and kept daily journals. She passed her love for reading to her children. She will also be remembered for her world class cooking, gardening, travelling and always having a warm heart for children and grandchildren.

Teresa is survived by her children, daughters, Glennis Gordon (Ned), Sydney, N.S., Tara Henry (Jim), Langley, B.C.; sons, Robert (Betty), Beaverbank, N.S., Randy (Diane), Sydney River, N.S., and George (Natasha), Ottawa, Ont.; grandchildren, Sean, Tara, Amber, Colin, Robert, Daniel, Sidney, Cameron, Iain, Conor and Georgia and great-grandchildren, Connor, Madison, Breanna, Justin, and Tanner. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Hickey (John) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Teresa was predeceased by her husband, Harry T. MacDonald, brothers, Frank Piercey, Robert ‘Bob’ Piercey, and sisters, Cecilia (John) MacNeil and Christina (Ross) Rudderham.

Visitation and memorial service to honour the late Teresa Mary MacDonald will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Tuesday, June 14, 2011. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1-2 p.m. with memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Light refreshments will be served following the service in the reception area. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Teresa’s memory may be made to the An Cala unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital or Palliative Care Society.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Pier Community Funeral Home.

At this time, the MacDonald family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the staff, especially to Karen at the palliative care unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their professional and tender care of Teresa in her time of need.

Marg dear heart, My thoughts and prayers are with you. I feel a sadness for you at the loss of terese. I share so many memories of her on the hill and in Halifax. Our generation is dwindling much too fast. May God keep you safe until I see you again.
