75, Belle Cote

With a deep sense of loss, the family of Donald Matheson, 75, of Belle Cote, announces his passing on June 17, 2011, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born April 14, 1936, in Friar’s Head, Cape Breton, Donald was the beloved son of the late William and Mary Matheson.

Donald married Anna MacLellan on Dec. 26, 1957, and together they raised three children, Betty, Toronto, Debby, Edmonton, and Ian, Kingston. Donald provided for his family through plumbing, electrical and heating (William Matheson & Son). There was never a service call too late or too far away. Later on in life Donald’s hobbies included repairing used appliances which he did, we believe, to enable him to go out and meet people. An extremely active community member throughout his life Donald had been; chairperson of St. Michael’s Parish Council, board member of the Highland Credit Union, executive chief of Margaree Volunteer Fire Department, councillor and Deputy Warden for the County of Inverness, member of Robert Wick’s Council No. 9936, a Fourth Degree Knight’s of Columbus, founding member of Belle Cote Community Center, founding member of the Cheticamp Snowmobile club, founding member of Sunset Funeral CO-OP, board member of Margaree CO-OP, and founding board member of the North Inverness Arena. Donald’s achievements include the exemplary and long service awards as a volunteer firefighter. Donald was also a proud card carrying member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia.

Donald is survived by his wife, Anna Matheson; children, Betty, Debby Gale (Harold) and Ian (Joanne); grandchildren, Brett Gale (Danusia) and Erin Gale; and a sister, Gloria LeBlanc (Harry).

Visitation for the late Donald Hector Matheson will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Belle Cote Community Center. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of Donald Hector Matheson will be held Wednesday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Parish, East Margaree, with Fr. Vincent van Zutphen officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald’s memory may be made to Palliative Care Unit Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Alzheimer’s Society or charity of choice.
