A life time member of the Order of St. John of Canada

Mary Debison passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 2011, at the An Cala Unit of the C.B. Regional Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late William (Bill) and Charlotte (Reid) MacLeod Campbell of Whitney Pier.

During her early life she was employed at the Star Theatre, later with the Royal Bank of Canada, George & Townsend Streets.

She was a member of Holy Redeemer parish, past president of the CWL and served on many committees. She gave of herself fully to the CWL and in fact, she knew all the rules of the constitution. She was recipient of the Maple Leaf Services Pin.

Mayme was a perpetual member of Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine in Mabou, the Association of Marion Helpers and a retired serving officer of the St. John Ambulance (484 John Vallance Division) after 30 years. She was a member of the SPCA, secretary of the MacKay Clan, a member of Whitney Pier Historical Society and a Co-worker of Mother Theresa and was privileged to meet her when she visited Holy Angels Convent, Sydney, in 1976. She was an avid reader until recently. During her lifetime her kindness and willingness to help others less fortunate, especially needy children, will always be remembered. She cherished the many friends she made throughout her life both young and old.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy and her husband, Paul Langlois of Sydney and three grandsons, Laurence of Indiana, USA, Kenneth of Toronto, Gerald and his wife Lindsay of Barrie, Ont. Also survived her nieces, Margaret Trenchard, Charlotte Mortimer and Susan Campbell all of Sydney. She will be fondly remembered by her true and faithful friend, Vera Pendergast of Sydney.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Debison (1992); her stepbrothers, Jack, Bernie and Billie MacLeod of Dominion; her brothers, Percy and Sidney Campbell and sister-in-law, Eva Campbell and a nephew, Joseph Campbell of Halifax.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Mayme Debison will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass to celebrate Mayme’s life will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks in family plot.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mayme’s memory to Holy Redeemer Church, VON or An Cala Unit of our Regional Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
