It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Sandy Blackwood after a brief illness, on Sunday, June 13, 2010, in hospital, Edmonton, Alta.

Born in Sydney, June 2, 1961, he was the son of William and Ruth (Madower) Blackwood, Sydney, N.S.

Sandy was an adherent of the Anglican Church. He was raised and attended school in Whitney Pier. He served with the armed forces and later in civilian life he worked in security at Shoppers Drug Mart stores. Sandy moved and settled out west and continued to work for a number of years with Northland Coliseum and at the time of his death, he was employed with Tremore Corp. as mechanical superintendent.

Besides his parents, Sandy is survived by his wife, Sue (Simpson); mother and father-in-law, Brenda and Reg Simpson; son, William ‘Bill’; daughter, Debbie (Michael); grandchildren, Justus and Shilo, all in Edmonton, Alta.; sisters, Raylene (Ernest) Lewis, Sydney and Lynn (Alain) Bourgeois, Ottawa, Ont.; brother, William (Mary), Windsor, N.S.; the mother of his children, Delores (Pookie Johnson) Lawrence, Edmonton, Alta.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Sandy was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, John ‘Jack’ and Anne Madower, Sydney and paternal grandfather, William Blackwood, New Waterford.

Visitation and memorial service for the late Sandy Blackwood will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Sunday, July 18, 2010. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 2-4 p.m. with memorial service to follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Maggie Coleman officiating.  Light refreshments will be shared after the service in the funeral home reception area. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to the SPCA.

Memorial arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Pier Community Funeral Home.
