Sydney
John Erickson Urquhart died peacefully with his lifelong best friend at his side at Hospice Cape Breton on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the age of 76.
Eric is survived by his best friend, Vera Urquhart; daughter, Cynthia (Gary); grandsons, Justin (Laura), and Ryan (Isabelle); brother, Peter (Cathy); sister, Joy (Murray); niece, Britanny (Graham); nephew, Gordie (Lauren) and great-nephews, Charlie, Oliver and Fletcher.
Eric is predeceased by his parents, Joyce and John Urquhart; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and his niece, Amanda LaRusic.
Eric served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 25 years as a dedicated medic. He served across Canada and in Germany. After retiring from the military in 1993, Eric cared for our mother for the next 11 years. He had a medical background and fierce advocacy allowed him to be a caregiver second to none. A real people person who could charm anyone he came across from doctors and nurses to servers at Dooley’s, Eric loved live music and could play a lively Ally Cat, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and many other tunes on the piano. Eric was also a hockey fan and a fan of a good joke, one of his favorites being “I could have been a doctor, but I had no patience.” A devoted son, brother and friend, Eric will be greatly missed by all who knew him including his “favorite sister”.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Eric Urquhart will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Friday, June 12, 2026. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 noon with the memorial service to follow at 12 noon in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
Special thanks for the outstanding care of all the nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Hospice Cape Breton, especially Dr. Anne D’Intino.
Donations in memory of Eric may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
