With sadness, we announce the passing of Stephen (Stefan) Sokołowski at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at age 86, with his friends at his side. Steve was the last surviving member of his family.

Stephen was born in Jabłońka, Poland, on September 15, 1939. His early years were deeply affected by war and occupation. Steve came to Cape Breton in 1959, sponsored by his grandparents Antoni and Katarzyna Rachfalski, who had settled in Canada many years earlier.

Steve worked in horticulture in both Cape Breton and Ontario. He had extensive knowledge of plants and gardens, and respect for nature. The family homestead, including a small farm, was at the far end of Frederick Street. Steve was a Sydney steelworker, well regarded by his peers. He suffered a work injury that led to severe hearing loss.

Stephen was a hard worker, a loyal friend and a kind, unassuming, grateful person with simple tastes who never wanted to inconvenience anyone. He had both physical strength and a gentle soul. Hardships made him even kinder. Steve loved Polish food and his Polish heritage. He enjoyed following current events and of course sharing many stories and memories. Steve was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Polish Parish.

Steve was predeceased by his parents, Ludwik and Józefa, and siblings, Anna Ptaśkiewicz (Bernard), Józef (Maria) and Rysia.

Heartfelt thanks to Bernie Paruch and Marjorie Ardelli for all their care, support and friendship. Steve was a cherished Polish elder to Oliver Urbaniak. Oliver’s parents, Tom Urbaniak and the late Alison Etter, were very grateful for Steve’s friendship. Thank you also to the staff of the Cove for all they do and to Dr. Jason Osborne and his ER colleagues at CBRH for the empathy and professionalism they showed.

There will be no visitation for the late Stephen Sokolowski. All are welcome to the Funeral Mass that will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Polish Church, 15 Wesley St., Whitney Pier, with Rev. Evo DiPierro officiating. Following the Mass a lunch will be held in rear of the church. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Stephen Sokolowski may be made to St. Mary’s Polish Church or a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Wieczny odpoczynek racz Mu dać, Panie. A światłość wiekuista niechaj Mu świeci.
Rest in peace, dear friend.
