Whitney Pier

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Gerald ‘Gerry’ William Snow, announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the age of 77.

Born on January 20, 1949, in Sydney, Gerry lived a life defined by dedication to his family and his passions.

Gerry is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Christine (Poswiata) Snow; daughter, Laurie MacKinnon (Scott); sons, Brian and Brent; and cherished grandchildren, Andrea, Haley (Raymond), Brian, and Ellie. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Sophia, and Charlotte. Gerry is also survived by his siblings, Larry (Darlene), Beverly Hayes (Tommy), Kansas (Judy), and Gloria Lush; sister-in-law, Wanda Lotherington (Kenny); brothers-in-law, Henry Poswiata (Debbie) and Michael Poswiata (Barb); as well as many nieces and
nephews.

Gerry was predeceased by his father, Clarence Edwin Snow; father-in-law, Henry Poswiata Sr., and mother-in-law, Mary Poswiata.

Gerry spent his younger years playing hockey with the Glace Bay Colts and continued his love of the sport through his junior hockey career with various teams. However, his true passion was horse racing. As a young driver, Gerry quickly became known for his skill and determination and was often in high demand to drive a wide range of horses. Though small in stature, he had a remarkable ability to handle any horse and never turned down an opportunity to race. Over the years, he achieved great success and formed lasting friendships at racetracks throughout the Maritimes and Ontario.

After a long day at the racetrack, Gerry enjoyed unwinding at home with his country western music. His favorite artist was Gene Watson, whose songs brought him comfort and relaxation. In 2019, Gerry was proudly inducted into the Cape Breton Horsemen’s Association Hall of Fame, a testament to his lifelong dedication to the sport. He retired from racing in November 2021.

Northside Downs was Gerry’s home away from home, where he spent countless hours with his beloved horses alongside his twin brother, Larry and brother-in-law, Henry. His greatest supporters were always close by—his wife, Chris, daughter, Laurie, son, Brian, and granddaughter, Haley. For Gerry, it wasn’t truly race day unless his whole family was gathered in the winner’s circle.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Palliative Care, VON, and Dr. James MacKillop for their care and compassion. Special thanks are also extended to Henry, Scott, and niece, Sherry for their support during the most difficult time following Gerry’s passing.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Gerry Snow will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Sunday, May 3, 2026. A gathering of family and friends will take place from noon to 1 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 1 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to Palliative Care, the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or a charity of one’s choice

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
