Dorothy ‘Sharon’ (Donohue) McCaskey passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney surrounded by her loving family after a short courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Neils Harbour, Sharon was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Daisley) Donohue, she spent her early years in the beautiful community of Dingwall.
In 1964, Sharon graduated from St. Martha’s School of Nursing in Antigonish. She worked as a nurse for 40 years, spending many years at St. Rita’s Hospital and Buchanan Memorial Hospital.
Mom was always there for her children and grandchildren with her warm smile, open heart, and unending compassion for others. Mom was the rock of the family who held us together with her strong spirit.
Left to mourn is Sharon’s son, Byron Donohue (Jerene); daughter, Eileen McCaskey (Gene); grandchildren, Katie, Erica, Bradley, Rebecca and great-grandson, Emmitt.
Special mention to Palliative Care at the Cape Breton regional Hospital and the COPD Inspired Outreach Program who had made Sharon’s last days better during her time of need.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026. Memorial Mass will be announced at a later date.
