For more than 30 years, Bill was part of our family. Bill worked on the railway at Sydney Steel from 1969 until retirement in the early 2000s. He enjoyed playing tarbish and bowling in the Thursday night Steel
Plant league at the Heather Lanes in Sydney for many years. He always supported our many sport endeavours and was there to cheer us on. He loved our family dog Sandy, even though he pretended he didn’t. Bill had many sayings that would make us stop and question, what exactly does that mean? Many of these we still repeat today. He was there for many life events, unless of course if he had too much house work to do. In retirement, Bill took on becoming a crossing guard, making sure children got to school safely, and heard a few jokes on their way. Bill enjoyed cooking with all 4 burners, and would always make sure we stop by for a full turkey dinner “with all the fixins” on a random Tuesday in July. He will be missed.
I grew up with Billy and his brothers when they lived on Dominion Street and I lived on Matilda Street. Both Billy and Greg spent a lot of time at our home and my mother loved them both. I hadn’t seen him in a long time but I did see him the last couple of times I went home and it was great to reminisce. He will be missed.
Bill was my neighbour in Glace Bay for over 30 years. Bill was an asset to the neighborhood for sure he always had a laugh and a story. He would be in the yard with Sandy and you would hear “oh Poocher” that was his nickname for my husband Butch. He would say I’m putting on the 4 burners and you knew a delicious meal would be coming! Bill always had a kind word for my elderly family. Bill was a constant presence at Holy Cross church with the Doyle Family. Bill touched the lives of all he met I hope there are 4 burners in heaven Bill!
