St. John’s, NL

While the shiny clothes and high heals are put away, the pictures and memories of her dancing, and looking glamours at the Pier Legion, in Sydney, will be talked about for years to come.

Re-united with her family who have gone before her, Gloria Anne Davis (Medora) passed on June 3, 2024, at the Residence at Littledale, St. John’s Newfoundland. She lived 89 of her 92 years in Sydney and became an Honorary Newfoundlander in Sept 2021.

Gloria was well known in her circles for always looking stunning: outfits, shoes, jewelry, and hair were her trademarks. Dancing was her sport of choice: where there was a dance, Gloria was there. Even in her later years at Littledale, these were still her passion. Many weekends were spent sniffing out the deals at the malls, and local thrift stores, for the perfect matching items for weekly Happy Hour, and Sunday Morning Mass at Littledale.

Gloria worked with FW Woolworth in her early years and transferred to Woolco a few years later. As a district supervisor for much of her working career, she traveled across Atlantic Canada by air, to Halifax, Moncton,

St. John, NB, and St. John’s, NL on a 6-week rotation. Not many women did this in the 70’s, but she did it well, dressed to impress, heals and all, and enjoyed that job thoroughly for many years. She spent many more years in Sydney River and Mayflower Mall stores in the Jewelry Dept.  When I brought her to St. John’s, shortly after having her stroke in 2021, she travelled like a pro on that plane, getting assistance to her seat, asking for a drink, and enjoying the flight.

After her husband, Roy Charles Davis, passed almost 30 years ago, she spent a lot of time volunteering in Sydney with Meals on Wheels for seniors, as well as the Each One Teach One program, which assisted adults to read. She also frequented the Sydney hospitals with reading materials for the sick, and of course, always dressed to impress with brightly colored outfits, as well as her trademark high heels. Patients and nurses alike would hear her coming down the hall with the click of her heels.

She was honored as Sydney’s Volunteer of the Year during this time.

And For many years to follow, people would see her at the grocery store, or out at a dance, or skating at Center 200, and remind her of encounters with them during those years, describing in great detail, what she was wearing on such occasions and how lovely she looked all the time .

There have been so many people who have touched our lives in the past 4 years. The care, patience, understanding and warmth that has been shown to us both, will always have a special place in our hearts, and we are grateful to all, beyond words.

Gloria is survived by 1 Brother, Edward Medora, 96, Sydney.

Myself and my partner Ron Roberts, a well as our remaining family, including

my brother, Russell Davis, 30-year career firefighter, Cape Breton Regional Fire Service.

Her 2 grandsons, my boys, Andrew Stone, St. John’s, NL, and Ian Stone, Vancouver, BC; and our beloved family friend Carol Ann Gearey, Albert Bridge, would like you to raise a little cheer in memory to Gloria.

Peace at last, and a return to her home in Cape Breton . She will be at final rest with other family members in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
