Whitney Pier/Sydney

We the family announce the passing of, Jean D. Horechuk, age 88, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a short illness.

Born on February 10, 1936, Jean was a daughter of the late William and Nellie (Orychock) Litowski. Jean lived most of her life in the Pier and was a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church, and a member of Ukrainian Catholic Women’s Club and Parish choir.

Jean had a love for her family and all social things. Jean was an amazing baker, cook and generous gift giver. Most of us will always remember her sense of style and fashion; she surely helped dress half of Sydney.

Jean is survived by her husband of 68 years, John Horechuk; children, Ken (Katie Markotich), Paula Johnson (Bob) and Cathy (Paul MacDonald); grandchildren, Zack, Tyler and Ella; brothers, Stanley (Moira), Bill, Michael (the late Brenda); sister, Patricia (the late Gary) Boyett; sisters-in-law, Stella (the late Nick) Horechuk, Barb (the late Fred) Horechuk, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Beside her parents, Jean was predeceased by sister-in-law, Ann Horechuk.

Thanks to Dr. Hall, the nurses and staff of Miner’s Lane, Harbourstone Enhanced Care and her previous health care providers Dr.Myatt, Janice and Laura for their care of Jean in her time of need.

There will be no visitation for the late Jean Horechuk. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. in Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Volodymyr Perun officiating. Following the Mass, a reception will be held in the upper level of the Ukrainian hall. Private family Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, at a later date.

For those unable to attend, Live Streaming will be available on our website.
