Whitney Pier

Annie Doreen Fifield has been promoted to Glory on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, from Hospice Cape Breton, Sydney, at the age of 92 after a tough but fast battle with cancer. She fought a strong battle and with a smile to the end.

Born on January 23, 1931, in Sydney, Annie was the daughter of the late George Henry and Muriel Edwards.

Annie was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army, first in Whitney Pier and then Sydney Community Church. She was a member of the songsters, home league, league of mercy, and pioneer club. She was Junior Soldier Sergeant for several years.

Mom loved baking, especially rice pudding and her famous ginger cake and molasses cookies. Crocheting, puzzle books, and computer games were some of her favourite activities.

Annie is survived by her daughter, Susanne (Eric) Wrathall; stepdaughters, Shirley (the late Ron) Lorway, and Edie Fifield; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Annie worked all her life as a caregiver for her family and as a nurse’s aide at the old Sydney City Hospital, Calgary General Hospital and Montreal General Hospital until she retired in 1972.

Annie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Besides her parents, Annie was predeceased by her husband, William Fifield; siblings, Grace Hillier, Florence Edwards, Louise Manning, George Edwards and Charlie Edwards; stepsons, Alvin (Edith), and George (Sandra); stepdaughter, Jessie (George); step-granddaughter, Dana Lorway Fraser, and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws. She was predeceased by her fur baby, Tippy just last week who shared her illness timeline with mom.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the ER, 4C, Palliative care, and Hospice Cape Breton, for all the care over the last five weeks of mom’s life. You all were awesome, and mom loved you all, especially the Hospice.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Annie Fifield will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Sunday, September 10, 2023. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Lieutenants Dion and Jennelle Durdle officiating.
