It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Hugh Alexander ‘Alex’ Digou on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his loving wife and family by his side.

Born in Sydney on September 29, 1953, Alex was a son of the late John ‘Jackie’ and Helen Digou.

Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 49 years, Sheila (Farrell); son, Nicholas Digou; daughter, Samantha Digou; brothers, Everett (Stasia) and Ross (Heather); sisters, Joan, Linda (Ken Dawson), Katie (Mike Paruch) and Judy (Ken Hutchenson); special friends, Mick Hogan and Shirley Covey; along with many nieces and nephews.

Alex was a volunteer fireman at South Bar Volunteer Fire Department until he retired. Alex was also an electrician. He worked at the Sydney Steel Plant, on the Lake Boats, in Alberta and British Columbia, then IBEW until his passing. In his free time, Alex could always be seen driving on his Honda Goldwing with his wife and friends or swimming at the Sand Bar.

The family would like to thank the staff and doctors of the OEII Hospital, unit 3B, especially RNs, Jessica, Kelly and Al, and at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, unit 4B, especially the RNs, Kelsey and Craig for caring for Alex in his time of need.

There will be no service for the late Hugh Alexander Digou. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Alex’s life will be held at the South Bar Fire Hall from 2 – 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023.  All are welcome.

Donations in memory of Alex may be made to the Tom MacNeil Cancer Care Patient Fund.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

My heart breaks for you all. I have so many found memories of Uncle Alex, and I’m so glad we had the chance to see him when we were home last.
He will be truly missed
