Sydney

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing or our mother, Thelma Jane (Bennett) King, on Monday, February 20, 2023, in the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 82.

Born in Glace Bay, Thelma was the eldest daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary Jane (Penney) Bennett.

Besides her parents, Thelma was predeceased by her loving husband, Neville; brothers, Benjamin ‘Benny’, William ‘Bill’, Allan ‘Allie’ and sisters-in-law, Sharon and Alice Bennett.

Thelma is survived by her two loving children, Richard (Helen) King and Deborah (Steve) Miller; brothers, Garfield, Gerry, Mike (Marcella), and Leo, all of Glace Bay; sisters, Gloria Bennett and Ann (Charlie) Long, both from Sydney; grandchildren, Jessica and Spencer Miller; as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her wonderful cousin, Olga Flynn of Glace Bay.

Thelma was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed baking, camping, going to dances and playing cards. Her greatest joy was her two beloved grandchildren, who she loved with all her heart.

The family would like to thank Dr. Zwicker who is so caring and compassionate, and all the other doctors and nurses of 4 A and the palliative care unit in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, who took care of Thelma in her time of need.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Thelma King will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Friday, February 24, 2023. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Jackie Warren officiating. Interment will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Thelma may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County or to a charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
