Whitney Pier

On Saturday, April 16, 2022, Carmel Theresa Butler of Irish Cove and Whitney Pier, decided to join the core of angels. She left peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on June 15, 1939, in Irish Cove, Carmel was the daughter of the late Anthony and Theresa (O’Connell) MacPhee.

Carmel’s life was all about family, friends, and great Cape Breton fiddle music. She dedicated her life to always helping others, whether being a lieutenant in sea cadets, a block parent or bringing her famous potato salad to whatever gathering she was attending. Carmel always had a story to tell and if you listened carefully enough, there was always a lesson within each story. She wore many hats throughout her life, the most important ones were wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Professionally she worked in Sydney Police Services, RCMP, Hobby Hut, and Archie Nathansons. Her favourite job was buying and selling shoes for Archie Nathansons, Carmel became known as the queen of colouring shoes and could match any colour to compliment the outfit. As busy as Carmel was, her door was always opened.

Carmel leaves behind her seven children, Cathy (Fay Wambolt), Colleen, Cindy (Reg Binns), Cheryl (Mark Berkeley), Donnie (Cheryl), Brenda (Dave Chapman) and Shane (Tanya); 11 Grandchildren, Anthony, Andrew, Abigail, Casandra, Cory, Courtney, Jessica, Darren ‘DJ’, Christopher, Ethan, Jack and 7 Great Grandchildren, Layla, Logan, Brina, Izabella, Evelyn, Max and Luke.

Besides her parents, Carmel was predeceased by her husband, Chesley Butler and grandson, Dean Shane Binns.

Mom is with dad discovering new adventures on their road trips in heaven and yes, they have their fishing rods.

The family would like to thank her family doctor, Dr. Amy Wambolt, also to Dr. Mark Sampson, and our deepest gratitude to Dr. Megan Keating for her kindness, compassion, and professionalism. Special thanks and gratitude to Palliative Care and VON. A special mention to Paul Latournal (VON) for his compassion, kindness, and professionalism to our family.

There will be no funeral service, a private celebration of Carmel’s life will be held at a later date.

Donations in memory of Carmel may be made to the SPCA or Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Patient Care Fund.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

MOM this is not goodbye, because wherever you are you will always be in our hearts.

My sympathy to Carmel and her family. I did not know her but meeting Brenda at the Regional was introduced to her sick mother. Twice I visited and spoke to her and met another daughter; and on another visit, two gentleman were by her bed. I honestly felt that your mother must have been a very special woman because the people I met were so gracious. This is the kind of people who make our world such a blessing. It was a privilege to visit and meet you .Deepest sympathy and know she is a peace with her God.
