Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father, brother, grandfather, husband, and friend, Joseph MacIvor, age 70, on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born on March 14, 1949 in Little Narrows, Victoria County, Joe was the son of Lillian (MacLean) and the late Daniel ‘Buster’ MacIvor.

Besides his mother, Joe is survived by his wife, Valerie (Hickman); son, Donnie (Kimberly) MacIvor and their children, Sidney (Matthew Benoit) and Kegan; as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his siblings, Dolly (Ed) Price, Ann MacIvor and Daniel MacIvor.

Joe was predeceased by his father, Buster and brother, Gerry (Anna) MacIvor.

Joe started his working career at the age of 16 with the Canadian Coast Guard on the icebreaker Labrador. At age 20, he worked with ironworker’s union for two years, and then at Sydney Steel on the railway for 19 years. Later he was employed with the City of Sydney until he retired in 2013 after 23 years of service.

Our family would like to thank the nurses, physicians, and staff on the Palliative Care Unit at Cape Bretton Regional Hospital for the care given to Joe during his time of need. Your kindness and compassion during this difficult time will forever be remembered.

As per Joe’s request, cremation has taken place. Memorial service to celebrate the life of Joseph Neil MacIvor will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the funeral home reception area following the service.

A private family interment will take place in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Washabuck Centre.

Donations in memory of Joe may be made to the Hospice Palliative Society of Cape Breton.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
