Whitney Pier

It is with broken hearts and great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Debra Marie Young, 31, of Whitney Pier, on Saturday, April 27th at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born on September 27th, 1987, Debra was the beloved daughter of Stephen (Sharon) Young and Cathy Violande. She was a graduate of Holy Angels High School and Nova Scotia Community College.

Debra will be remembered for her beautiful smile and courageous spirit in the face of life long health challenges. Debra loved celebrations, visits with family and friends, and especially enjoyed suppers at Papa and Gram’s.

Besides her parents, Debra is survived by her grandparents, John and Kay Violande; brother, Jonathan (Amy) Young; sister, Jennifer (Ryan) Guillena; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Debra will always be remembered by Valerie Cox, who provided a lifetime of love, friendship, and care, as well as great friend, Arlene.

Debra was predeceased by grandparents, Rev. John and Edna Young.

Visitation for the late Debra Marie Young will be held on Wendesday, May 1, 2019 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 6-9 p.m.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the Mass, a reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home.

Interment will take place in New Calvary Cemetery, Whitney Pier at a later date.

Donations in memory of Debra may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit , Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

I was saddened to read of Debra’s passing. I have fond memories of her smile lighting up the hallways of Holy Angels.
