It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Mae Benvie on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Northwood Terrace, Halifax.

Born on March 28, 1921 in Sydney, Alice was the eldest child of the late James and Alice (Wagner) Duguid.

Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by her husband, Steve Zagwolski; son, Robert Zagwolski; sisters, Gladys, Dorothy, Ernestine and June; brother, James and two brothers in infancy. Alice was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Left to mourn the loss of Alice are her daughters, Elaine Zagwolski (Ryan) Frank, Halifax and Linda Zagwolski-Durand (Ben), Lower Sackville; sons, Stephen ‘Buddy’ (Jeanette) Zagwolski, Brampton, Ontario and David (Linda) Benvie, Albert Bridge; stepson, Edward Benvie, Halifax; fifteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation and funeral service to celebrate the life of Alice Mae Benvie will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Monday, April 29, 2019. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1-3 p.m. with service to follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area following the service. Private family Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney at a later date.

The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers on 1 Centre, Northwood, Halifax for their excellent care and compassion given to our mother over the past two years.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alice can be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
