It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our mom, Florence Elaine MacDonald, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her faith in God, strong will to live and prayers from loved ones helped her through her struggle. She passed on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her loving family at her side.

Born in Whitney Pier in 1934, Florence was the daughter of the late William and Isabel MacIntyre.

Mom was a certified nursing assistant at St. Rita’s Hospital prior to her marriage. When she married, she chose to become a full-time mom to her five children that would follow.

Florence is survived by her husband, Mike; brother, John (Nel) MacIntryre; sister, Ann (Lloyd) Gardiner; children, Allan (Judy), Ramona (Dave) Finlay, Glenn (Kim), Kelly and Maureen; grandchildren, Rachelle (Scottie), Michael (Skye), Glenn (Lauren), Nicole (Johnathon), Derrick (Emma), Rory, Victor, Brianna (Theo) and great-grandchildren, Caiden, Viola, Gage, Preston and Noah.

Besides her parents, Florence was predeceased by brothers, Billy and Vince; sisters, Maude, Eileen, Ramona and Donelda in infancy.

Mom was a wonderful and caring lady who loved to read, chat with friends and enjoyed visits from family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy. She was never shy to tell you she was from ‘The Pier’ and enjoyed sharing many stories of her youth. Mom was a person of faith. Her day was not complete without saying her daily prayers.

The family would like to express our thanks to oncologist, Dr. Kodadad, her family doctor, Dr. Gracie and the VON nurses for their care and kindness during mom’s cancer battle. The palliative care team at the hospital was very caring to the end.

Visitation for the late Florence Elaine MacDonald will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the Mass a reception will take place at the Pier Community Funeral Home. A private family Interment will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of the late Florence Elaine MacDonald may be made to Hospice Palliative Care, Cape Breton County.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.
