It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Bertha Mary Farrell on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the R. C. MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney.

Born in Baddeck on March 10, 1927, Bertha was the daughter of the late Mary MacKenzie and the chosen daughter of the late Roderick and Mary (MacDonald) MacIsaac.

Bertha was married at Holy Redeemer church and was a member of the Ladies Auxilary. She was a faithful member of St. Theresa’s parish and was involved in the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Ladies Auxiliary where she was a lifetime member. Bertha was an avid knitter and crocheter who donated her work to charities like The Salvation Army and the Bell Aliant Telephone Pioneers. She also supplied blankets for new-borns for which she received appreciation awards from the pre-natal unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Bertha liked bowling, darts and bingo from which she had many friends. She enjoyed life to the fullest and the many friends she made over the years. She loved her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bertha was special to all who knew her and will be dearly missed by her family.

Bertha is survived by her children, David (Helena), Charlie (Karen), Eddie, Donnie, Michael, Marilyn (Fred) Gillespie, Joann, Debbie (Wayne) Stockley, Catherine Mortensen, Linda (Lawrence) Digou, Sheila (Alex) Digou and Pearl (Boris) Santekuces; brothers, Roderick and Angus; 33 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Deloris (Gerald) Putt, Donna (Frank) Dziubek, Alice ‘Tootsy’ Corbett and Patsy Kiley; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Besides her parents, Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Michael Farrell; children, Marie Berard, Patricia and Tommy; sisters, Annie, Catherine and Phyllis MacKenzie; brothers, Malcom and Donald; sisters-in-law, Kathleen, Theresa, Dorothy and Margaret; brothers-in-law, John, Raymond, Pat and special friend, Gar Murray.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Mom will be held on
Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street).

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 1:30 p.m. with Fr. Dennis Lamey officiating. Light refreshments will be shared in the funeral home reception area following the service.

Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of the late Bertha Mary Farrell may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Bertha’s family want to thank the doctors and nursing staff on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the R.C. MacGillivray Guest Home for the care given to our mother during her time of need.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Pier Community Funeral Home.

Condolences to Bertha’s Family on her passing. We had many great times over the years that we spent in the Lady”s Auxilliary. She ws my marching buddy for a lot of the Remembrance Day Parades. It saddens me that I will be unable to pay my respects as I will be out of town. Rip my good friend.
