It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Leonard “Nicker”, on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in Sydney, March 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary Ellen (Keough) Hollohan.
Nicker was a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish. He was a veteran of World War II, merchant marine. Nicker was a call firemen with the Sydney fire dept., taxi driver, stevedore for Wells Linemen and finished his working career as a crossing guard at the corner of Victoria Road & Church Street for over 20 years. He was known as an avid reader.
Nicker was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, Whitney Pier.
He will be sadly missed by his family and all that had the pleasure of knowing him.
Surviving is his longtime companion, Iris Stewart and family. He is also survived by a brother, Rev. Ronald Hollohan and his wife, Mary as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Nicker was predeceased by his three brothers, Leo, Raymond and Cletus.
A graveside memorial service to celebrate Nicker’s life will take place at New Calvary Cemetery, Brooks Street on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 1 p.m. with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Last Post ceremony will be given by the royal Canadian Legion branch 128, Whitney Pier.
Donations in Nicker’s memory may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund or charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Pier Community Funeral Home.
