Sydney

June 15, 1963 – August 10, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt and dear friend, Katherine ‘Kathy’ Jeanette MacKinnon, on Sunday, August 10, 2025, surrounded by love.

Born on June 15, 1963, in Sydney, Kathy was the cherished daughter of the late Michael and Jeanette MacIntyre.

Kathy’s greatest joy in life was being a mother. She will be forever loved and deeply missed by her children, Neil MacKinnon (Alicia Locke), Kristen MacKinnon Angers (Bruno Angers), Ryan MacKinnon (Desarae MacDougall), and Candace MacKinnon (David Fogarty). She was filled with joy and anticipation as she awaited the arrival of her first grandchild, Bridget Anne, due on August 18, 2025.

Kathy shared a lifelong, unbreakable bond with her sisters, Judy MacIntyre, Eunice McGuigan (Maynard), Michelle Currie (Daniel), and Jane MacIntyre, a connection built on love, laughter and unwavering support. Each sister held a special place in Kathy’s heart.

Kathy was also blessed with many nieces, and nephews. She shared an especially close relationship with her nieces, who brought endless joy to her heart and shared in both her brightest days and hardest battles.

A talented hairdresser, Kathy formed lasting bonds with her clients, many of whom became dear friends. Kathy loved the simple joys in life, the sun in her face at the beach, taking in the fresh air on her back deck, the peaceful beauty of Neil’s Harbour, and time spent with those she loved most, her family and friends.

She faced life’s challenges, including multiple illnesses with incredible strength, courage and resilience. A special thank you to the staff of the CBRH, Cape Breton Cancer Centre, and the QEII who cared for Kathy in her time of need.

Visitation for the late Kathy MacKinnon will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held in the funeral home in the All Faith Chapel on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in New Calvary Cemetery, Whitney Pier.

“She loved the ocean and now she rests in its peace. Her soul embraced by God’s eternal light. Kathy’s prayers were steady like the waves and her faith lifted those around her. May her spirit remain with us, in every breeze, every tide and every whispered prayer.”

Donations in memory of Kathy may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
