With sadness, we the family, regret to announce the passing of John Alonzo Lucas on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief battle with cancer.

Born on May 19, 1948, in Sydney, John was the son of the late Bill and Jeannette (Mintus) Lucas.

John worked in as a crane operator at Sydney Steel until his retirement. John took great pride in maintaining his lawn and beloved hedges. He loved going for long walks and enjoyed going fishing with close friends and family.

John is survived by his partner of many years, Mary DellaValle; sons, Jared (Rachel) and John Jason; daughter, Cynthia Urquhart (Gary); grandsons, Justin Urquhart and Ryan Justus; sisters, Esther and Karen (Blair) King; brothers, Curtis, William Jr. and Donald; as well as several nieces, nephews and his best friend, Boo Dwyer.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Rollie.

A special thank you to the VON, palliative care team and the Cape Breton Cancer Centre who provided exceptional care, guidance and support to John and his family in his time of need. The family greatly appreciates all that was done to make John’s last days comfortable and peaceful.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of John Lucas will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.) Whitney Pier on Friday, August 6, 2021. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 noon with the memorial service to follow at noon in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Covid protocols will be followed at the service.

Donations in memory of John may be made to the Red Cross or a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
