Whitney Pier

It is with broken hearts that we, the family announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Geraldine ‘Sackie’ Myrna (Crane) Ayre on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

We take great comfort in knowing that mom is now reunited with her loving husband of 38 years the late William Gordon Ayre.

Born on March 1, 1941 in Sydney, Geraldine was the daughter of the late William John and Lena (Launay) Crane.

Geraldine was a loving mother to seven children, Mary, Bill (Coralie), Gary, Norman (Annie), Lyndon, Karen (Neil), and Jeanette (Louise); she was a wonderful grandmother to her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she cherished. She is also survived by her sisters, Hazel Kozera, Linda (Ivan) Henderson, Anne MacDonald, and Shirley Gardiner; brothers, William (Toni), John (Doris), Alonzo, Robert (Vangie), and Ronnie (Helen); as well many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Geraldine was predeceased by her sisters, Rosie MacAskill, Olive Drover, Gertrude Mollons; brother, George Crane; son in-law, William Mullowney; as well as many brothers and sisters in-law.

Our mom will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved spending time spoiling her precious grand and great-grandchildren. Geraldine was a woman of strong faith and was an active member and volunteer for many years in St. Alban’s Anglican Church. Her favorite past times were bingo, watching soap operas, shopping, cooking, and baking. Mom was famous for her delicious tea biscuits and sweet treats. We will forever miss her storm day calls checking up on everyone to make sure they got home safe.

Due to covid 19 restrictions there will be no visitation. Memorial service to celebrate the life of Geraldine ‘Sackie’ Ayre will be held at St. Alban’s Anglican Church, Whitney Pier at a later date. Private family interment will take place in Eastmount Cemetery, Whitney Pier.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Geraldine may be made to St. Alban’s Anglican Church or to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Mom‘s favorite quote is from a song by Garth Brooks. “Our lives are better left to chance. I could have missed the pain. But I’d have had to miss the Dance.” Keep Dancing Mom, we love and miss you.
