Sydney

We, the family of Allan Sheppard, age 72, wish to announce the passing of our bother and uncle on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Sydney on September 17, 1948, Allan was the son of the late William and Stella (Sigut) Sheppard.

Allan lived most of his life in Whitney Pier and was a member of Holy Redeemer Church. In his younger years, Allan played baseball in the Pier and he was an avid sports fan, but his passion was harness racing, and he was a horse owner for a number of years. Allan was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128. He was a Pipefitter by trade and spent many years working across Canada with his good friend, Wayne Champion. Allan was a 50-year lifetime member of the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 682. He was the longest serving member on the Executive Board of Local 682, served on various committees and proudly represented his union at conferences in Canada and the USA.

Besides his parents, Allan was predeceased by his son, Jason Sheppard.

Allan is survived by his sisters, Joan (Terry) Burns, Sydney, and Laine (Greg) Atchison, North Carolina; nieces and nephew, Jocelyn (Darryl) Brewer, Brian (Kate) Burns and Leigh (Will) Laudon; aunts, Lillian Sigut and Florence (George) Sigut; as well as many cousins.

The family would like to thank the VON, the CBRH Cancer Unit, An Cala Palliative Care Unit as well as Allan’s neighbours and friends for their kindness and support in Allan’s time of need.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be celebrated on Thursday, March 18, at 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Due to Covid restrictions a maximum of 100 people are permitted in the church and masks are mandatory. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Allan may be made to CBRH, An Cala Palliative Care Unit, VON, or charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
