Membertou

It is with deep regret that we, the family, must announce the passing of John Howard MacLean, formally of MacLean Street, on Friday, December 11, 2020 at the QEII Hospital in Halifax after a brief battle with a villainous cancer.

Born on June 29, 1949 in Sydney, John was the son of the late ‘Red Jack’ and Theresa (Stevens) MacLean.

In his youth, John was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders. He became a welder through the Vocational School and was employed as a journeyman millwright at the Steel Plant for 30 years until the plant closed in 1994. He then studied at UCCB and received credentials as an Industrial Millwright with the local 1178 United Millwrights of America.

John was a father of two but became a father to others. He knew everyone and was a friend to many. He was loved by his family and his community and will be missed by all who knew him. John was a proud Cape Bretoner who loved his family and doing things for others as he faced life with his own brand of humor.

John is survived by his beloved wife, June Christmas of Membertou; daughters, Deann (Anthony), Ericka (Paul) and Amy (Gt); brother, Owen (Lynn); sister, Ann Marie (Sean); grandchildren, Ava, Dylan, Lara, George and Evander; great-grandchildren, Raiden, Denayah, Kaylan and Loeya; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by brothers, Barry, Ralph and Kevin; sister, Sandra; his beloved daughter, Melissa and grandson, Raegan Michael.

Visitation for the late John Howard will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) TODAY, Tuesday, December 15, 2020 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, December 16, 2020 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of John’s life will be held in the funeral home, All Faith Chapel on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks at a later date.

Donations in memory of John may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice.

A live streaming link will be available during the service.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
