South Bar

With heavy hearts we share that ‘Bill’ William Patrick Bennett passed away peacefully on Monday, November 9, 2020 in the DVA unit at Taigh Na Mara in Glace Bay.

Born on Valentine’s Day in 1925 in Sydney, Bill was the son of the late Elizabeth (Hannam) and Thomas Bennett.

Bill was a proud WWII veteran and a member of Branch 128 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Whitney Pier where he shared a glass with his friends. He loved to hunt and fish, especially with his brothers, along with trips to Tim Hortons with mom. He and mom shared a life together for 61 years and he missed her so much.

Pre-covid, Bill enjoyed many outings with his brother, Tom and good friend, Eddy. He liked country music and Newfoundland tunes.

Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by his wife, Rachael (MacDonald) in 2018; brothers, Gordon, Allan and Lee; sisters, Mildred ‘Moon’, Mary, Kay and Lillian ‘Doods’.

Papa is survived by his daughter, Judy (Rene); son, Jeff (Carolyn); grandchildren, Dr. Alison Dixon (John Mullane) and Sean Dixon (Colleen Boudreau); “Biggie” Papa to five great-grandchildren, Desmond and Linden Dixon and Roman, Francesca and Anthony Mullane; brother, Tom; as well as many nieces and nephews and will especially be missed by his niece, Colleen.

Services for the late Bill Bennett will take place on Friday, November 20, 2020. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Social distancing and masks are required in church. A gathering of friends and family will follow at the Pier Community Funeral Home. A private family interment will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of Bill may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care & direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
