Sydney

It is with broken hearts we inform you of Kevin’s sudden death on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Kevin was born in Whitney Pier on May 2, 1942 and was the son of the late Joseph and Francis (Gillis) Peck.

His early education was at Don Bosco, the Monastery, Sydney Academy and The Junior College. He worked from 1960 – 1964 at the Fortress of Louisbourg Restoration.

In 1964, Kevin and his fiancée, Bonnie MacNeil moved to Toronto. (Don’t worry) Bonnie lived with her grandmother and in 1965 they married. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, George and his dad, Joe, Kevin joined the police force in 1968 in Toronto. He worked there for the next ten years.

In 1977 Kevin and Bonnie returned to Sydney, where he worked with his cousin, John D. Gillis, lawyer. After John’s death Kevin worked at the sheriff’s department and retired as interim sheriff in 2005.

Kevin was a long-term member of the K.O.C. local 1060 in Sydney. Until recently, he faithfully sold K.O.C. bingo cards at Membertou. Kevin was also a member of the Sydney Pensioners Club and loved playing tarabish. He was a faithful member of Holy Redeemer and St. Theresa’s parishes.

Kevin was a very special stalwart, kind, loving, dependable 6’4” teddy bear. He cared deeply for his family, both immediate and extended, and his many friends and neighbours and all his shopping buddies. Kevin enjoyed reading the weekly flyers, always looking for the best bargain.

Kevin was a wonderful husband and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bonnie (MacNeil) Peck; daughter, Jennifer Dawn (Leandro Salazar), Edmonton and his 15 month old grandson, Cortez ‘My Little Buddy’. In Jen’s words, “He was the greatest Dad in the whole world” and he enjoyed daily walks with his little fur baby, Molly.

Kevin is also survived by his brother, Francis Hugh ‘Babe’ (Donna), Ontario; sisters, Margie (Jim) MacNeil, Coxheath, Loretta ‘Rettie’ (George), Flin Flon, Manitoba; uncle, Maurice Peck; sisters-in-law, Marg Koski (Roger), Ontario, Elizabeth Young (George), Angela Calder (Jack), Patsy Kendrick MacNeil and Diane Peck; special spiritual sister-in-law, Shirley Christmas; brother-in-law, Doug ‘Sonny’ Rankin; several nieces and nephews and a very special cousin, Ray Smith.

Besides his parents, Kevin was predeceased by his brother, Joseph ‘Buddy’.
Kevin’s wishes were to be cremated and brought back to his beloved Whitney Pier.
Prayers and visitation for the late Kevin Peck will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street).  K.O.C. prayers will take place at 2:30 p.m. followed by visitation from 3 – 7 p.m.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 26, 2018 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the Mass a reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks at a later date.

Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Kevin may be made to the SPCA Cape Breton or charity of one’s choice.

Send an online condolence.

Bonnie and family I am so sorry to hear of Kevin sudden passing. Kevin was a very kind and loving man who I always looked up to and respected. I remember when I first met Kevin was when I was just 19 years old in Toronto. I remember the times I spent at your house in Toronto and I would watch football with John and Kevin and I hated football and still do today. But to spend time with Kevin meant the world to me.He always treated me like a member of his family. Last time I saw him was here at my house a couple of years age when him and John came to my house and I gave home made beans. He truly was and amazing loving person and will be missed by al who knew and loved him. Rest in Peace my dear cousin and friend. Love and prayers to you and you family at this very sad time.
