It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Michelle Rich, age 48, on Sunday, January 28, 2018, at home, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with AML.

Born on December 27, 1969, in Sydney, Michelle was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna Johnston and grew up on Alexandra Street.

Michelle loved figure skating as a young girl. She took pleasure in watching her horse, Gracious Minnie, race at Northside Downs and enjoyed spending time with her grandkids who she adored. Going for drives and Tim Hortons were two of her favourite things. She will be missed by her dog, Opie. Most recently Michelle was employed at Citizenship where she enjoyed lunch with many of her friends.

Michelle is survived by her husband, Kenny; daughters, Brittney (Kenny), Leanne (Raymond), Stephanie (Terrence); grandchildren, Caden, Kaylee, Kiley, Hannah and Aaliyah; brothers, Kevin (Agnes) Johnston, Ray (Janet) Johnston, Michael (Shelly) Johnston and sister, Sharon (Sandy) Campbell. Michelle is also survived by her father-in-law, Mickey Rich; brother-in-law, Michael (Virginia) Rich; sister-in-law, Leah (Allie) Leadbeater; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Michelle was predeceased by her mother-in-law, Faye and sister-in-law, Bev.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Michelle Margaret Rich will be held in Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Thursday, February 1, 2018. A gathering of family and friends will take place from noon – 2 p.m. with service to follow at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area following the memorial service.

Special thanks to the Staff of Unit 8A and 8B of the VG Hospital, Dr. Lisa Gammell, VON, Palliative Care, Barb Beaton and the Radiology Department of the Cape Breton Region Hospital for their special care given to Michelle during her time of need.

Donations in memory of Michelle may be made to Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton County or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
