Whitney Pier

We, the family regret to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Idella Best, age 74, on Thursday, Mar. 16, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney, Idella was the daughter of the late Harold and Annabell (Gero) Kirton.

Idella was a mother to Kim, Whitfield, Robert and Missy. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary, Joyce, Julie, Lena, Allistar, Wanda and Annabell; father of her children, Whitfield Best; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Idella was predeceased by her sister, Charlotte and brothers, Alonzo and Eleazor.
Mom’s whole life was her family. She was an active member of St. Philips African Orthodox Church, Whitney Pier. She loved church bingo, darts and aerobic fitness classes. She enjoyed going for breakfast and day trips with her friends especially, Friday grocery shopping with her sister. Mommy’s biggest joy was spending time with family and friends.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

Visitation for the late Idella Best will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Tuesday, Mar. 21, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Mar. 22, 2017 at 2 p.m. in St. Philips African Orthodox Church, Whitney Pier, with Patriarch Vincent Waterman officiating. Following the mass a reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 128, Whitney Pier. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, at a later date.

Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, hospital staff and friends who provided special care to our beloved mother during her time of need.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Idella may be made to St. Phillips African Orthodox Church, Altar Guild.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.

To The Best & Kirton Family; I was so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of your mother. She was always a kind and gentle woman and treated everyone she met with a smile and a kind word. She was always fun, so full of life a gentle and warm soul who love her church and people who went there. She was always there for the bingo and the Caribbean festival, cooking and dancing while she cook with that great smile on her face. Her great achievement were her children, Kim, Whitfield, Robert, Missy and her granddaughter, Kendall and her two great grand babies. know that she is looking down on you and know she is back in her father God's arm now suffering no more pain only joy to know you will always be there for each other. ? ? ?
