Whitney Pier

It is with heavy hearts and a profound sadness that we announce the death of a loving son, brother, father, uncle and friend, Cyril Travis Desmond, on Monday, May 23, 2016, Sydney.

Born in Sydney on Feb. 24, 1959, Travis is survived by his mother, Marie Margettie (Desmond) and his stepfather, Stanley Margettie of Whitney Pier. To mourn in their loss is Travis’s son, Ryan Desmond (mother, Charmaine (Desmond) Brewster) and his brother and friend, Darren Desmond. He is also survived by several stepbrothers, stepsisters, nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. Sharing in the family’s loss are Travis’s best friends, Dave Shaeen and Garfield Yakimchuck, and his special nephew, Darien Reynolds.

Travis was predeceased by his brother, Albert Forde, grandmother and grandfather, Theresa and Albert Desmond and step-grandfather, James Smith.

Travis was employed as a firefighter with the Sydney Fire Department and later the Cape Breton Regional Fire Services for 30 years until his retirement. Travis was an outstanding athlete, playing senior level fastpitch baseball in which he excelled on the field in any position but especially, as a pitcher.  Travis was a community volunteer; coaching both baseball and tennis for several years, giving back was something he cherished. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Cyril Travis Desmond will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), on Friday, May 27, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Committal will take place in the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel. Following the committal prayers a reception will be held in the funeral home reception area.

Donations in memory of Travis may be made to the Whitney Pier Boys and Girls Club, Sydney.
