Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Peggy Howell, 90, on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Unit, surrounded by her loving family.

Peggy was born on Sept. 23, 1925 in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Mary (MacFarlane) Gillis from Margaree Harbour.

Peggy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many summers in Northside East Bay, where she was known as ‘Aunt Peggy’ by many children. She was often the first to brave the cold waters for the first swim in the spring.

Peggy had a great faith and was a member of the CWL in Holy Redeemer Parish. She was also a former religious education teacher, a Eucharistic Minister, and Pastoral Care worker within the parish. She also had volunteered at the Loaves and Fishes program which was in former Holy Redeemer Parish Hall.

Peggy is survived by sons, Frank (Linda) and Joe (Lila); daughters, Beverly (Wayne) Morrison, Yvonne (Paul) Madore, Patricia (Rick) Alisch and Jacqueline (Jamie) Clarke; son-in-law, Alvin Gallant; one sister, Rose LeBlanc; two sisters-in-law, Martha Gillis and Eileen Gillis; brother-in-law, William; grandchildren, Frank, Illona, Jeannine, Alicia, Linda, Mike, Chris, Nick, Natasha, Blaire, Caitlyn, Mackenzie, Ben, Cameron and great-grandchildren, Nora, Cole and Max.

Besides her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Henry; daughter, Madonna Gallant; brothers, Joseph, John, Hugh, Myles, and Alexander; sisters, Tina Campbell, Rita Heffernan, Sister Mary Lydia Gillis and Sister Grace Virginia Gillis, both formerly from Sisters of Charity and also John Harold and Mary Margaret in infancy.

Visitation for the late Peggy Howell will be held on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the mass a reception will be provided by the CWL in the lower level of church. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Peggy may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

We’ll miss her humour and her smiling face. However, we know that from now on she will always be “Ticketyboo”!

Send an online condolence.
