South Bar

It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister and best friend, Clara Mae Gale, 86, on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at the Seaview Manor, Glace Bay.

Born in Whitney Pier, Clara was the daughter of the late Hilton and Julia (MacLeod) Phillips.

Family was everything to Clara. She was a wonderful grandmother and lived life to the fullest. Clara was a rural mail carrier for 25 years in the South Bar area. After her retirement, Clara was able to spend more time volunteering at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Clara very much enjoyed skating, walking, bowling, and was a horse shoe champion. If Clara was not home, she could always be found socializing with her club member friends. Clara will be remembered by her family and friends for her outgoing nature and great sense of humour. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Clara is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Charlie) Walsh, Sandra Gale, Susan (Bruce) Young and Shauna (Bob Howard) Winters; sisters, Thelma McKay, Myrna Thomas and brother, Elmer Phillips. She is also survived by her eight loving grandchildren, David Petitpas, Chris Fougere, Robert Petitpas, Suzanne Lanceleve, Ben Young, John Glen Young, Scott Winters and Julia Winters; eight adorable great-grandchildren, Cameron and Callie Fourgere, Jordyn and CJ Lanceleve, and Alex, Evelyn, Clark and Whylie Young; as well as many nieces, nephews, close friends, and a special friend, Donald Ross.

Besides her parents, Clara was predeceased by her husband, John and siblings, Hugh, Wilbur, Melvin, Lloyd, Ella, Mildred, Evelyn and Olga.

Visitation for the late Clara Mae Gale will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Clara will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel with Rev. Gary Burrill officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area following the service. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in memory of Clara may be made to Salvation Army, Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.

A special thank you goes to all those who gave their love, support and care to our mother, Clara, during her time of need.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.

To Clara Gale's family; It was with great sadness that we learned of Clara?s passing. Each one of us feels a special personal loss as Clara always entertained us with her wit and warming smile at our regular luncheon meetings. A true friend and a true Pier Girl. She leaves us with many happy memories. She will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences go out to each of the Gale and Phillips familes at this difficult time.
Sincerely, Pier Girls '94 Luncheon Group

Aunt Clara is someone you would always want to strive to be like. Her presence would light up a room full of people. She would have you laughing till your sides split. She opened her home and her heart always. She would give the shirt off her back if needed. Her true love was her family. Aunt Clara you will always be in my heart forever. I love you.

I was very saddened to hear of Aunt Clara's passing. My brother Kevin and I spent many happy summers in South Bar with Aunt Clara and Uncle Johnnie and our cousins. So much fun going fishing for mackeral, picking blueberries and just being with family. Nobody knew how to have as much fun as the Phillips' girls. We were lucky to have so many aunts, uncles and cousins around when we were growing up. Aunt Clara was a wonderful lady and a favourite aunt. Her great sense of humour and wonderful personality will be missed by all of us.
