Whitney Pier

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Brenda Costigan on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at her home.

Born on Nov. 26, 1956, in Sydney, Brenda was the daughter of late Michael and Agnes (Whelan) Costigan.

Mom was our angel. She sacrificed so much of herself for her children and everyone she loved. She loved us more than anything in this world, and we loved her more than words can say. She was beautiful, kind, generous, and caring.

Brenda leaves behind her children, Krista (Shaun), Raymond (Danielle), and Mark (Rebekah); stepchildren, Dwayne, Gary Jr., Lorraine (Joey), Carey (Rob), Matthew (Leah), and the love of Brenda’s life for the last 22 years, Gary Dalton. She also leaves behind Krista, Raymond, and Mark’s father, Shaun Henick; as well as her brothers and sisters,  Joe (Elizabeth), Lorraine, Helen (George), Marie, Linda (Murdock), Mike (Pat), Brian (Debbie), Mary, Nancy (Wayne), Peggy (Arno), John Glen, Beatrice, Martha, and Tom; special grandchildren, Logan, Ethan, Brooklyn, Kaylin and Noah; 11 additional grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Brenda was predeceased by Gary’s mother, Mary Dalton-Smith; niece, Tracey Bartlett; brother, Sam Costigan and brothers-in-law, Chalmers MacIntyre and Phil Constantine.

Visitation for the late Brenda Costigan will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be celebrated on Sunday, July 5, 2015, at 1 p.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A reception following the service will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Brenda Costigan may be made the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

We miss you now, our hearts are sore
As time goes by we miss you more.
Your loving smile your gentle face
No one can fill your vacant place…

My condolences. I am so sorry to hear about Brenda. I worked with her for years at St. Rita's Hospital and she was a true sweetheart. We had some good laughs together. I ran into her a few times in the past year or so and was always glad to talk with her. The shock must be too hard to bear, my prayers and thoughts are with you.

Remember me and smile, for it's better to forget than to remember me and cry.
Dr. Seuss Mark, Rebekah, Noah & family – wishing you and your extended family strength at this very sad time. Heartfelt sympathies and much love from myself and all of your family at National Speakers Bureau.

Deepest sympathy on the sudden passing of your mother, partner, grandmother and sister. I worked many years with Brenda at St Rita Hospital, City Hospital and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. I was a new grad when I met your mom. She taught me a lot over the many years we worked together. She always spoke kindly of her children and family. I was shocked to read of her sudden passing. I have so many fond memories of your mother and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you go through the difficult days ahead.
