81, Sydney/Whitney Pier

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Abbie Elizabeth Deveaux on Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born on March 2, 1932 in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Abbot and Elizabeth (Parks) Keagan, of Forrest Street, North Sydney.

Ma was employed at the City Hospital in Sydney for 30 years until her retirement.

Some of her favourite past times were playing bingo, two to three times a week, watching the Toronto Blue Jays and tennis. Ma also enjoyed having family Christmas dinners. She will be remembered by her family and friends for being down to earth and her great sense of humor.

Ma is survived by her sons, Larry ‘Tete’ (Betty), Terry, Allan (Michelle) and Ronald (Marlene); and daughters, Johann (Ray Clements), Heather (John MacSween), Nancy (Shaune Porga). Abbie also leaves behind her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sister, Catherine Doucette, Dartmouth, brother, Emmanuel (Rosella) Keagan, North Sydney; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Ma was predeceased by her husbands, Larry Deveaux and Ron Hawco; sisters, Elsie Whalen, Anna Deveaux and Jean keeping; brothers, Reginald, Lawrence, Gordon, William, Earl, Lloyd and Kenny. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Lawrence Clements and daughter-in-law, Debbie Deveaux.

Visitation for the late Abbie Elizabeth Deveaux will be held today (Wed., July 3) at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Alex MacLellan officiating. A reception following the mass will take place at the Pier Community Funeral Home. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

Donations in memory of Abbie may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
