Reserve Mines

December 10, 1935 – June 10, 2026

William Raymond Blackwood, age 90, peacefully passed away at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. Born in New Waterford on December 10, 1935, Bill embraced life with zest and enthusiasm, always staying active with a wide range of interests including dancing, motorcycle riding, rollerblading, ice skating, curling, card games like tarbish and euchre, and sharing coffee at the mall with friends. His adventurous nature and love of activity persisted throughout his years.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Raylene Lewis (Blackwood), and son, Raymond (Sandy) Blackwood. Bill is lovingly survived by his children John Odo, William John Blackwood, and Lynn Blackwood-Bourgeois; and grandchildren Natasha Lewis-Doherty, Bradley Lewis, Alain Bourgeois, Christine Bourgeois, Logan Blackwood, Spencer Blackwood, Will Blackwood, and Debbie Blackwood. Time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immense joy.

Bill enjoyed a long and varied career, beginning in coal mines as a young boy and later working aboard survey vessels. He spent many fulfilling years as a heavy equipment operator with the International Union of Operating Engineers, taking pride in jobs such as the Mayflower Mall and the Causeway.

He shared a lifelong bond and enduring friendship with Ruth Mae Blackwood—a relationship he deeply treasured.

Bill will be remembered for his warm smile, humour, and appreciation for simple joys—whether dancing, skating, curling, playing cards or telling stories that made lasting memories with those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and kindness and will be missed by all who knew him.

A visitation and memorial service celebrating William’s life will take place at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (Church St. entrance), Whitney Pier, on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
