It is with great sadness that we, the family of Joan Marie Agnew, announce her passing on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Born on January 19, 1939 in Sydney, Joan was the daughter of the late Robert ‘Bob’ and Mary (Lahey) Bailey.

Joan was a bookkeeper for the Dominion Store, Best for Less, IGA, and Joan’s Grocery in the Pier. She was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128 in Whitney Pier where she spent 20+ years as treasurer. In her earlier years she loved to go camping and travel. She loved her Saturday night Casino night and her bingo.

Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by the love of her life, Lawrence MacLean.

Joan is survived by her four children, Robert (Shelley), Sandy (Linda), David (Cathy), and MaryLynn (Barney);
11 grandchildren, John David, Jeffrey, Cory, Amber, Kelsey, Michael, Josh, Dennis, Toni, Kyle, and Angelina; 20 great-grandchildren, Emily, Lance, Ethan, Chloe, Lucas, Ryder, Ellie, Bentley, Easton, Briar, Reese, Rogan, Emmett, Parker, Cameron, Jaxon, Greyson, Eric, Haley, and Lilly.

A heartfelt thank you to the staff and nurses on the ‘An Cala’ Palliative Care unit (Especially Vicky) and to the earth angels at Hospice, Cape Breton. The nurses, the staff, the volunteers, along with Dr. Anne Frances D’Intino who all were there for Joan in her time of need.
Visitation for the late Joan Agnew will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home in the All Faith Chapel on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jackie Warren officiating. Interment will take place Eastmount Cemetery, Whitney Pier.

Donations in memory of Joan may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
