Whitney Pier

It is with deep sadness that, we, the family announce the sudden passing of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Daniel ‘Danny’ MacDonald, at the age of 91. He passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Born in Glace Bay, he was proud to be from “Number 11” and often talked lovingly about growing up in his hometown. As a teenager, his family moved to his forever home in Whitney Pier, a community which he made lasting memories and friendships, and raised his family.

Danny was the son of the late Margaret (Warren) and Hughie Francis MacDonald of Glace Bay.

Danny is survived by his children who were the center of his world, Julian ‘Butch’ Alleyne (Betty), Lillian (Todd) Marsman, Daniel (Laurel), Jimmy (Lori), Noreen (Charles) MacKinnon, Darren (Patti Lynn), and his son-in-law, Darren Googoo. He also leaves behind a legacy of love in his beautiful grandkids, Todd (Brittany), Kayla, Brandon, Marissa, Raven, Cassie, Faith, Andrew, Jayden, Ethan, Kael, Dante, Jaxon, Jamison, Connor and his great-grandchildren, Dax, Riley, Claire and Steph. Sharing in our loss are Danny’s many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Danny is also survived by his sister, Lucy Worrell; his big brother, Hughie (Rose) MacDonald, and his sister-in-law, Rose Holland.

Meeting our Dad in heaven will be many angels but especially his soul mate, Elfreda (Alleyne) MacDonald and his beautiful daughter, Levina MacDonald Googoo.

Besides his parents, Danny was predeceased by his brother, Johnnie MacKinnon; sister, Flora English; sisters-in-law, Shirley, Julia, Gloria, and Diana Alleyne; brothers-in-law, Joseph Worrell and Danny Alleyne, and his best friend, Frank Jacobs.

Dad’s love of sports included him cheering on his favorite teams, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Leafs, the Packers, and his boyhood love of the Dodgers was something to be admired.

A longtime lover of harness racing “Tartan Downs”, Dad would spend his evenings with the crew at the Winner Circle where he would find a friendly face, great conversations and many laughs.  Placing a bet was always a gamble but the enjoyment he felt spending time with his racing buddies was always a Win.  Thank you for always holding his seat and for the memories.

Special thanks to our sister, Lillian, and brother-in-law, Todd Marsman, for your kindness, love, and support. It has not gone unnoticed.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of our Dad will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 1:30 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A reception will take place immediately following the service. Interment will take place at Forest Have Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in memory of Daniel may be made to the Autism Society of Cape Breton.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
