Sydney

Our beloved Mama, Ann Marie (Snow) Peters of Sydney, passed away peacefully at home on May 16, 2025, at the age of 90, following a brief illness.

Born on April 21, 1935, in Sydney, Marie was the daughter of the late Bernard and Sarah (Norcott) Snow. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend – her life grounded in faith, family, and a lifelong passion for education.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Abe Peters; children, Reg (Trish Larade), and Ann Marie (Peters) Baldwin (John); grandchildren, Jason Peters (Brandie), Sarah (Baldwin) Moore (Richard), Jillian Peters (Lance Laffin), Stacia (Baldwin) Gunn (Neil), and Stefanie Peters (James MacIntyre); six great-grandchildren, Josh and Bria Peters, Hannah and Ivy Moore, and Joy and Faye MacIntyre, who brought her endless joy.

Marie was predeceased by her brothers, William, Leo, and Bernie Snow, and her sister, Frances (Snow) Quinn.

Marie spent her career as a teacher, beginning in a one-room schoolhouse in Portage and retiring from Jamieson Elementary in Whitney Pier in 1992. With compassion, patience, and an unwavering belief in the power of learning, she inspired countless students and colleagues alike.

Mama was the matriarch of our family, the heart of our home, and the glue that held us together. Her love was steadfast and her wisdom deep. She had a spirited personality, a quick wit, and a sharp mind that she kept honed with the Cape Breton Post crossword puzzle, completed daily without fail.

Marie had a remarkable gift for finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved listening to songs around the campfire during many cherished summers with family and friends in Ben Eoin. Her laughter was contagious, her stories unforgettable, and her poetic soul ever-present.

A talented writer, Marie marked every milestone with an original poem, always signed with love as “The Idiot Poet,” a title she gave herself with pride.

Her legacy of love, kindness, and quiet devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Marie will be deeply missed. Each night, she would send us to bed with the words, “Sleep with the angels.” Now, when we do, we will find comfort in knowing she is among them, gently watching over us.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Ann Marie Peters will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Thursday, May 22, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 1 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of Marie be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Annie, John, Abe, Reggie, Trish, and all the grand kids, great grand kid, the rest of the family and friends, I truly mourn your loss. She was a beautiful lady, inside and out, her love for her family was without denial. Her heart was warm and welcoming. Loved the Christmas plays in the basement that I was welcomed to attend. Losing a loved one is hard, but her love will live on in all of you. In your hearts, in your memories, an through what she taught you about love and family, ❤️

Abe, Reg, Ann Marie and family so sorry to read of Ann Marie’s passing. My memories of her in grade 6 are very vivid. Having her nephew Greg in her class made for some interesting days. Greg would try and use the fact she was his aunt only to be quickly put in his place. A great teacher. I always enjoyed running into Ann Marie and having a catch up. May the many memories comfort your loss.
