It is with great sadness that the family of William Douglas MacArthur regret to announce his passing on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born on May 12, 1945, in Glen Morrison, Doug was the son of the late Lester William and Alene (MacKinnon) MacArthur.
Doug is survived by his wife, Sheila (Campbell) MacArthur; son, Blair MacArthur (Cathy) and daughter, Lisa MacArthur (Greg); five beautiful grandchildren with whom he had a very special bond and whom he adored very much, Brett, James (Hannah), Jordan, Brandon and Emma; two great-grandchildren with whom he loved and also had a very special bond, Kara and Kasey; brother, Cecil (Sheila); sisters, Gertrude, Muriel, Anna, Blanche, Dale, Joyce (Joe) and Cynthia (Wendell); as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his sisters, Janet, Mary, and brothers-in-law, Arnold, Robert, Gerald, Brendon and Cornelius.
Doug was employed with Municipal Ready Mix Limited for 45 years where for the majority of those years, he worked as a heavy equipment operator (loader), and in the final years operated the asphalt plant. He also worked as a woodsman for many years and owned his own sawmill.
Doug was an avid Boston Bruins fan for many years and other sports as well. He also enjoyed his weekend and Wednesday night family card games.
The family want to thank the staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital 4B unit for the wonderful care they provided to Doug and the exceptional care he received in the palliative care unit by doctors, nurses and caregivers.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of William Douglas MacArthur will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 1 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A reception will follow the service.
Donations in memory of Doug may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society or charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

RIP Sorry for your lost Sheila and Family. I never got the chance to meet Mr macarthur but i do know Blair and his family very well. They raised a great son and grand children. My condolences to all of his family. God Bless you all
