Mira Gut

It is with profound sadness that we, the family announce the peaceful passing of Frederick ‘Fred’ Joseph Hanna, age 65, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born and raised in Cape Breton, Fred was the beloved son of the late Fred and Viney (Campbell) Hanna. He was also predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Angus and Vange Campbell, and paternal grandparents, Fred and Jean Hanna.

Fred will be deeply missed by his children who he loved dearly, Jeffrey, Kristen (Shady), and Nicholas, and his five grandchildren who he thought the world of, Landon, Lila, Lexie, Kinzy, and Aiya. He is also survived by his brothers, David (Ara), Stephen (Kim) and Derrick (Brenda); sister, Sheri, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends near and far.

Fred was a man of strong work ethic and adventurous spirit. He started out working at Sydney Steel plant and then worked the rest of his life as a tool and die maker in North Sydney, Ontario and Mexico, where he embraced new experiences with his characteristic humour.

A true outdoorsman at heart, Fred enjoyed playing hockey, hunting and fishing in his younger years. Since retiring he enjoyed spending time outside, either doing yard work or spending time at Mira Gut beach. He was a lifelong Chicago Blackhawks fan, and his love for sports was only matched by his love for the Cape Breton landscape.

In 2020, Fred fulfilled a dream by returning to his roots, purchasing land in beautiful Mira. There, he found immense joy in the quiet and simplicity of retirement, surrounded by the nature he cherished.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses in the ICU of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their exemplary care and compassion given to Fred during his time of need.

Gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Fred Hanna will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton SPCA or a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

He has traded his fishing rod for wings, but his stories and his love remain with us always.
